South Kent Wind

Municipality of Chatham-Kent, Ontario

South Kent Wind is Pattern Energy and Samsung Renewable Energy’s first joint venture project. It is one of the largest wind facilities in Ontario, producing electricity equal to the needs of nearly 250,000 Ontarians every year.

u003cstrongu003eSouth Kent Wind brings substantial economic benefits to the region, including approximately $16 million over the first 20 years of operations in property taxes for the Municipality and local schools. The facility also contributed $2.5 million to improve safety and user accessibility at the Chatham-Kent airport.u003c/strongu003e
u003cstrongu003eOntario committed to phasing out coal-fired generation in 2002 and met that goal in 2014, the same year South Kent Wind became operational. Today, wind turbines harness the wind across the province to generate homegrown energy without harmful emissions.u003c/strongu003e
u003cstrongu003eThe South Kent Wind (SKW) Community Fund supports local causes through a grant process administered by the Chatham Kent Community Foundation. Every year – in perpetuity – an estimated one-quarter of a million dollars is expected to be available for grant distribution among five areas of giving.u003c/strongu003e

The Chatham Kent Community Foundation accepts grant applications for the SKW Community Fund on their website. Funds are distributed to qualifying non-profit organizations and support capital, operating, and special one-time costs for facilities, programs, and events. A committee of seven members from the community evaluate applications bi-annually.

The 270 MW South Kent Wind facility entails 124 Ontario-made 2.3 MW wind turbines with Siemens blades manufactured in Tillsonburg and CS Wind towers built in Windsor using steel from the province.

South Kent Wind had more than 500 workers on-site during peak construction activity, with 99% of the workforce from Ontario. With the help of local contractors, 15 team members operate and maintain the facility.
