How does solar energy work?

Solar panels are designed to capture energy from the sun and convert it into electricity. Solar facilities typically generate the most power during the daytime, which is often when electricity demand is highest, making solar a strong complement to the broader energy grid. 

What criteria do you look for when deciding where to build a solar project?

Solar facilities generally need four things: a strong solar resource, landowners who want to participate in a project, a connection point to existing transmission infrastructure, and local demand for new generation capacity. 

What benefits does a solar project bring to the local community?

Solar projects bring new revenues to local governments, which can be used for things like funding schools, improving roads, and supporting emergency services. They create construction jobs and long-term operations positions, and give participating landowners a dependable new source of income. Because solar can be sited in many geographies, it is bringing a significant investment opportunity to more communities. 

What is it like living or working near a solar project?

Solar facilities are quiet neighbors. Some equipment produces a low hum that fades to ambient noise levels at the site boundary. Once built, a vegetation management plan often uses native and pollinator-friendly plants that can support soil health over the course of the project. An operations and maintenance crew keeps the facility running efficiently, with routine upkeep handled by a small local team. 

What are solar panels made of?

Solar panels are made primarily from glass, silicon, and aluminum, the same everyday materials found in home electronics and construction. Copper and other common metals are used in the racking and wiring, materials that have been safely installed on homes and businesses for decades. 

How long do solar panels last, and are they built to handle the elements?

Solar projects, like most power plants are designed to operate for 25 to 35 years or more. Panels and racking are engineered to be durable, meeting or exceeding applicable building codes, and facilities are monitored around the clock to keep performance on track. 

What does construction look like for a solar facility?

Building a solar project follows a carefully planned sequence: clearing and grading the site, installing steel piles and tracking systems, burying electrical lines, then mounting and connecting the panels. Pattern coordinates with local road authorities on traffic, dust, and noise throughout, and a dedicated point of contact keeps neighbors informed. Once construction wraps, disturbed ground is restored and reseeded. Most projects move from site preparation to full commercial operation in roughly 9 to 18 months.
