Pattern People: Carlos Roman

April 14, 2022

Every so often Pattern Energy likes to introduce one of our team members to the communities we serve. It’s a fun way for people to get a peek inside Pattern Energy, and we’re proud to introduce our team members to the world.

World, meet Carlos Roman!

Carlos Roman at Santa Isabel Wind, “The best wind farm in the Caribbean!”

“For the first time in my professional career, I feel like I love what I do,” and then he paused briefly before repeating himself. “I love what I do, and what makes it better is that we are doing our part to fight pollution and build a better future. I know wind power works, and I’m proud of the part we play.”

Carlos Roman is the Assistant Facility Manager (AFM) at Santa Isabel Wind in Puerto Rico, an entrepreneur, and a pilot!

Carlos and his wife Vanessa in Dubai

With a bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Carlos has always had a passion for aircraft. “I love being out in the field, working on different aspects of the wind turbines,” Carlos told me. “In a lot of ways, the turbines resemble aircraft, which I enjoy.”

Santa Isabel Wind or, in Spanish, Finca de Viento Santa Isabel, has eight people on site day-to-day to maintain and operate the site. Oscar Velazquez is the Facility Manager, Carlos is AFM, and there are an additional six technicians from Siemens rounding out the local team.

“I am passionate about learning, and that is a big reason I enjoy my role here at Santa Isabel Wind,” he told me. “I learn from the technicians, and they learn from me. We all exchange knowledge, and it is both personally and professionally satisfying.”

Carlos went on to tell me that as he has gained experience with the turbines,: “I continue to be impressed with our technology and equipment, and I believe I work at the best wind farm in the Caribbean!”

As he told me more about Santa Isabel Wind, Carlos said the turbines are resistant up to category 4 winds. “Our turbines are on land, but they were designed to handle offshore, super tough conditions. They are corrosion resistant, and since hurricane season occurs six months of the year here, our equipment is built to last!”

Carlos has a full plate at Santa Isabel Wind checking turbines, working with technicians, inspecting the power substation and more, but he has a passion for it.

“For the first time in my professional career, I feel like I love what I do,” and then he paused briefly before repeating himself. “I love what I do, and what makes it better is that we are doing our part to fight pollution and build a better future. I know wind power works, and I’m proud of the part we play.”

Carlos the Pilot

“My true passion is flying,” Carlos said, and I wasn’t surprised.  (A man with a degree in Aerospace Engineering is bound to like aircraft).

“I have a goal of purchasing my own airplane,” Carlos told me with a bit of excitement in his voice. “My two passions are flying and traveling. I love everything about traveling! Meeting new people, new cultures, learning new ideas, it’s great!”

He told me his dream trip would be to fly a plane to Patagonia in Argentina and experience the extreme outdoors and natural beauty there.

“I also want to fly my family around the Caribbean in my plane,” he laughed. “I love to fly, and I love to travel!”

Carlos: Family Man, Pizza Mogul

Vanessa is Carlos’ wife and their daughters are Yumi and Yuki. Vanessa has two bachelor’s degrees and shares Carlos’ love of the outdoors. She is learning to enjoy travel and the new people and places it brings.

One of Carlos’ Marco’s Pizza restaurants

In addition to being an AFM for Santa Isabel Wind and a licensed pilot, Carlos owns two locations of Marco’s Pizza in Puerto Rico.
“I have always loved Marco’s Pizza,” Carlos said with some passion in his voice, “It’s really good pizza. You have to love what you sell, and I love Marco’s.”

And because he still isn’t doing enough, he’s opening a Mexican restaurant this year!

I asked Carlos if he was doing enough with his life, and he started laughing. “I have a good family, a great career, and a nice life. I am a happy man.”
