The Futtsu Solar project, located approximately 1 hour from Tokyo, Japan, was one of Green Power Investment’s first solar projects in the country. It is also GPI’s largest solar development in Japan. The facility commenced commercial operations in the first quarter of 2016 and operates under a 20-year power purchase agreement with TEPCO Energy Partner.

Community

Located just outside of Tokyo in Chiba prefecture, Futtsu Solar was developed in an area known for its fishing and industrial economy. The Futtsu Solar facility development is a renewable energy project that supports the local economy and engages the community via direct payments, event sponsorship, and more. Two full-time representatives work onsite.

Environment

Located on a repurposed sand mine, Futtsu Solar takes the Japanese phrase “mottonai” to heart. Do not waste is an important driver for both GPI and Pattern Energy, and the project highlights how important it is to use what is available, especially in a country where land is limited.

Technology

The 31 MW Futtsu Solar project utilizes Kyocera solar panels and required the help of local firms for construction.
