Armow Wind is located in the Municipality of Kincardine in Ontario, Canada. At its northern latitude, it is no surprise that the area experiences intense winters and high snows. These conditions are quickly turned to the local community’s advantage with a well-maintained network of snowmobile trails.
Our Armow Wind team committed $13.6 million to the Municipality of Kincardine as part of the Armow Wind Project Community Benefit Program, which includes a $1 million contribution to the Kincardine Airport Improvement project. True to our Canadian interests, we also sponsor local junior and minor hockey teams.
The facility employed an average of 200 workers on site throughout project construction and approximately 350 workers during peak construction periods. Today we have 15 permanent jobs with contractors utilized as needed.
In 2002, the Province committed to phasing out coal-fired generation, and the development of wind energy helped Ontario meet that goal in 2014. We’re proud to be part of that commitment. Compared to coal-fired generation, Armow Wind annually offsets the CO2 equivalent of 116,900 cars, and conserves enough water to supply 16,700 people.
The facility sits on agricultural land and is dotted with ponds and pastures for grazing sheep and cattle. We helped restore the site to its preconstruction state with the planting of more than 200 native trees.
Armow Wind is a 179 MW joint venture between Pattern Energy and Samsung Renewable Energy Inc., a subsidiary of Samsung C&T Corporation. The facility consists of 91 Siemens 2.3 MW wind turbines. The turbine blades were manufactured by Siemens in Tillsonburg, Ontario, and the towers were manufactured by CS Wind in Windsor, Ontario.
Armow Wind began commercial operations in 2015. Construction was performed by AMEC Black & McDonald. The project sells 100% of its electrical output and environmental attributes under a power purchase agreement with the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator.
