Under the leadership of Coach Moses Mora, the Kingsville, Texas, H.M. King Early College High School boys basketball team has been a rising force in recent years. Coach Mora, who is also a physical education teacher at the school, became head varsity coach in 2021 and has already made an impact.

In his first year as head coach, the Brahmas won their first district title in over 20 years and were the bi-district champions. Following the stellar debut season, Coach Mora was named the South Texas Boys Basketball Coach of the Year and the Corpus Christi Caller Times selected him as the All-South Texas Coach of the Year. Junior point/shooting guard Nathan J. Garcia received First Team All-South Texas honors.

The team’s success continued into the next year, where they won the District Championship again, marking the first time in history that a high school had won it two years in a row. The team advanced to the Area Championship, won the regional quarterfinals, and reached the regional semifinals for the first time in 40 years. Coach Mora was named district coach of the year for the second time in a row.

In Coach Mora’s third year, the team faced injuries and finished fifth in the district. “We were hit hard,” said Coach Mora. “We had four sophomores and one senior starting, and we were playing tough schools. Our team played hard, never quit, and gained valuable experience. Our four sophomore starters will be returning next season as juniors, and we’re going to be stronger for it.”
