A Call to Maintain Focus & Safety

June 9, 2024

The safety of our workforce needs to be the project’s highest priority, and Pattern is here to support in any way we can.

Todd Bell’s comments after his recent flight over SunZia:

We were quite surprised by the amount of work completed in Arizona. Seeing around 40 miles of structures was an incredible sight.

The pad sites’ organization and cleanliness were impressive. They were neat, clean, and well-organized, which, as I’ve always said, is a good indicator of the project’s culture and the quality of its craft and leaders.

The complexity of the civil work is unfathomable until you actually see it. Some of the cuts and fills were incredible.

Paige Canyon logistics is top-notch and will only become more complex with the addition of towers and stringing.

The PJ and Quanta aviation teams were very hospitable. The pilot explained some of the constraints on helicopters in certain areas due to environmental factors and other considerations. It’s crucial that we continue to abide by the helicopter rules the project committed to in order to avoid any negative impacts from agencies and environmental groups.

Flying over Sevilleta helped us understand the Tri-State line, ROW constraints, and what it looks like.

Stay diligent and watch out for complacency on a project of this magnitude.

We are approaching about a year into full SunZia construction with more than a year left and in some cases 2 years (depending on the scope).  We are entering the hottest months of the year in a very hot and dry climate, so intentional diligence and training need to be provided to keep our workforce safe and provide them with means to complete their work safely.

We need to be very diligent about avoiding complacency and ensuring complacency mitigation is top of mind on a project of this magnitude, with a longer schedule than standard projects.

The safety of our workforce needs to be the project’s highest priority, and Pattern is here to support in any way we can.
