Hatchet Ridge Wind

Shasta County, California

Located near the town of Burney between Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen, Hatchet Ridge Wind was the only utility-scale wind facility to reach operations in California in 2010.

  • Compared to coal-fired generation, the site’s annual production conserves enough water to meet the needs of 5,000 people and avoids carbon dioxide emissions equal to 50,000 cars. Our team supported site reforestation following project construction by planting 62,000 pine trees.

  • The wind facility property is shared with some of the largest commercial Christmas trees in the country, managed by Carlton Christmas Trees. Trees grown in this forest have graced many city centers, hotels, and retail holiday displays.

  • Hatchet Ridge Wind expects to generate more than $30 million over the first 20 years of operations in tax payments benefiting the local region and schools.

The Hatchet Ridge Wind Community Benefits Program invests $5 million in the local community through the Shasta County General Fund, the Burney-Fall River Education Foundation, and the Burney Regional Community Fund administered by the Community Foundation of the North State.

We place great importance on being an active part of the local communities where we have a presence. In addition to our formal Community Benefits Program, we give back through sponsoring local groups, causes, and events.

The facility entails 44 SWT-2.3-93 wind turbines, with turbine blades made in Iowa by Siemens Gamesa and towers made in California by Ameron International.

Local businesses and workers were heavily involved in the yearlong construction period—from building roads and preparing turbine sites to union laborers for turbine wiring and erection and Pit River Tribe cultural monitors. With the continued help of local contractors, six team members operate and maintain the facility.

Electricity produced by the 101 MW facility is equal to the electricity needs of more than 100,000 Americans and sold to Pacific Gas and Electric Company under a 15-year power purchase agreement.
