It was just another routine trip for Roque and his CONAM water truck, but as he passed Pecan Drive, something caught his eye—a house engulfed in flames…
CONAM water trucks play a vital support role on SunZia construction sites by suppressing dust and improving air quality, which supports safety in operations.
A CONAM water truck was driving south on Hwy 70 near Lordsburg, NM when Roque Villareal, the truck’s operator, noticed a single fire engine attacking a house fire at Pecan Drive.
Without hesitation, water truck operator, Roque pulled over and called out to the firefighters, “Do you need water support?” The crew yelled back, “We could use all the help we can get.” Understanding the urgency, Roque immediately radioed management, who quickly dispatched the rest of the CONAM crew.
Before they arrived, Roque assessed the potential dangers, ensuring the team was prepared:
- Harmful fumes—know our limits.
- Watch the wind—stay out of the danger zone.
- Always have an escape route.
- Help where we can but never exceed our training.
As soon as backup water trucks arrived, the crew rolled out their rear hoses, handing control to the firefighters while using their training to assist. Fellow crew member Francisco Chavez recalled from previous CONAM safety training that the side sprayers could be a game-changer for fire suppression.
With guidance from the fire crew, they maneuvered the truck into position, unleashing a powerful stream that helped contain the fire.
Thanks to Roque and his fellow crew members’ quick thinking, CONAM’s water trucks proved critical, outlasting the fire department’s tanks and slowing the spread to nearby structures and orchards.
When the flames were finally under control, local authorities approached the CONAM crew with deep gratitude, saying, “They were a lot of help when we needed it most.”
All three CONAM operators were recognized by leadership and commended for their bravery, quick decision-making, and disciplined approach under pressure.
